Control and automation engineering education: Combining physical, remote and virtual labs
Abstract
This paper discusses challenges and opportunities in engineering education, in particular in the area of control and automation, that have been made possible through advanced IT systems and Internet. The paper reviews different types of didactic plants that evolved hands-on and simulated labs, both local as remotely accessed, to mixed reality and virtual world labs, where student avatars are used to increase the sense of reality and promote collaboration. As experience shows that alone the use of such didactic plants is not enough to ensure success in the learning process and that their integration into e-learning environments is important, the main characteristics of Computer Supported Collaborative Environments (CSCE) are discussed and some relevant initiatives in this area are reviewed. The paper also describes an e-learning system developed by the authors, which has been successfully applied to several automation engineering courses in Brazil.

Virtual laboratories used in learning new content result in an effective learning process for students and motivate them to repeat experiments freely during practical courses.
“For example, virtual laboratories utilised in learning new content have resulted in an effective learning process for students and motivated them to repeat experiments freely during practical courses (Chakravarti et al. 2021;Pereira et al. 2012;Popović and Naumović 2016).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
