INCREASED DIAMETER OF DEMYELINATED AXONS IN CHRONIC MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS OF THE SPINAL CORD
Open accessAbstract
Shintaku M., Hirano A. & Llena J. F. (1988) Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology 14, 505–510 Increased diameter of demyelinated axons in chronic multiple sclerosis of the spinal cord In an autopsied case of chronic multiple sclerosis, many axons in some demyelinated plaques of the spinal cord had remarkably increased diameters and reduced argentophilia. The increase in axonal diameter extended for some distance and was restricted to the demyelinated areas. A review of 22 autopsy cases of chronic multiple sclerosis revealed similar findings in the plaques of the spinal cord in seven cases. They were also noted in the brain but much less frequently. On electron microscopy, the neurofilaments in these enlarged demyelinated axons were not closely packed but were separated by an increased amount of electron–lucent axoplasm. It is thought that this finding may be a manifestation of increased water content in the axoplasm secondary to increased permeability of the demyelinated axolemma.

Variations of myelin density are expected to contribute to observed patterns of NDI.
“Although altered exchange of water between intra/extra‐axonal space (i.e., permeability)40, 44 may have contributed to the observed patterns of NDI, it is expected that variations of myelin density would also contribute.”

The Discussion (page unavailable) links demyelination to axonal swelling and suggests that altered permeability may increase axoplasmic water content. That provides a possible mechanism by which myelin changes could affect a water-based measurement, but the paper does not examine myelin-density variations or NDI patterns. (LLM, conf=0.76)

“In white matter, this may reflect reduced collateral branching or morphological alterations of individual axons.(40) In gray matter, reduced orientation dispersion may imply reduction in the complexity of dendritic arborisations.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
