The Dose–Response Association Between Reported Moderate to Vigorous Intensity Physical Activity and Atherogenic Index of Plasma: NHANES, 1999–2006

Abstract

Objective: Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), calculated as LOG10 (triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol), may be utilized to predict risk for cardiovascular disease. Physical activity has been shown to have a favorable association with triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. The dose–response association between moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and AIP has yet to be determined in a nationally representative sample of US adults, which was the purpose of this study. Methods: Data from the 1999–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used (N = 6694 adults aged 20–85 y). Leisure-time physical activity over the previous 30 days was self-reported, whereas AIP was calculated from a venous blood sample. Multivariable linear and logistic regression tested the independent association between MVPA and AIP. Results: The authors observed a significant inverse, graded association between quantile of MVPA and the AIP (Ptrend < .001). Conclusion: Engaging in MVPA may attenuate the risk for cardiovascular disease via improvements in AIP. More longitudinal research is necessary to confirm these cross-sectional findings.

  • Trials reporting the effects of exercise on apolipoproteins and lipid ratios suggest that exercise training exerts a positive effect on these biomarkers.

“Trials reporting the effects of exercise on apolipoproteins and lipid ratios suggest that exercise training exerts a positive effect on these biomarkers [23–25]”

From Estimating the Effect of Aerobic Exercise Training on Novel Lipid Biomarkers: A Systematic Review and Multivariate Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials (2023) · cites this paper as [24]

The paper’s Abstract reports that some aerobic exercise interventions reduced the atherogenic index of plasma, a lipid ratio, but also says intervention results were mixed: interval and resistance training showed no significant change. It does not report effects on apolipoproteins, and its own NHANES analysis was observational rather than a trial. (LLM, conf=0.88)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
