Abstract

We present differential bathymetry and sediment core data from the Japan Trench, sampled after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake to document that prominent bathymetric and structural changes along the trench axis relate to a large (~27.7 km 2 ) slump in the trench.Transient geochemical signals in the slump deposit and analyzing diffusive re-equilibration of disturbed

  • The acoustic facies of these depositional bodies are distinct from chaotic reflection patterns and irregular top morphology in areas where local deep-seated slumps have transported older sedimentary units to trench basins or where shallow co-seismic slip propagation has deformed trench sediment.

“The acoustic facies of these depositional bodies are distinct from chaotic reflection patterns and irregular top morphology in the areas where local deep-seated slumps have transported older sedimentary units to trench basins (Kawamura et al., 2012; Strasser et al., 2013) or where shallow co-seismic slip propagation has deformed trench sediment (Kodaira et al., 2012).”

“In the hadal Japan Trench, the AD 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake remobilized young fine-grained surficial slope sediments enriched in organic matter, which was eventually deposited in the more than 7 km deep trench (Arai et al., 2013; Oguri et al., 2013; Strasser et al., 2013; Ikehara et al., 2016; McHugh et al., 2016; Kanamatsu et al., 2017; Bao et al., 2018; Kioka et al., 2019; Molenaar et al., 2019”

The Dating section (page unavailable) links the observed slump and sediment remobilization to the 2011 earthquake or an aftershock, while the Introduction reports coring in Japan Trench water depths up to 7.6 km. The core descriptions identify muddy deposits and the Dating section identifies geologically young material. However, the paper does not establish that the remobilized material was organic-matter-enriched surficial slope sediment; its Discussion instead proposes a deep-seated rotational slump. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
