A systematic literature review on user centered design and participatory design with older people

Abstract

User-centered design (UCD) and participatory design (PD) are framework for developing applications suitable for the users' characteristics. However, UCD/PD provide little guidance on how to involve older people in the development process. We performed a Systematic Literature Review to know better how these processes are conducted with the participation of elderly people. We selected 51 papers published at ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore and Science Direct from 2013 to 2018, and extracted information about how and why UCD/PD has been used with the elderly, which were the used methods, what activities were performed with the elderly and also suggestions for future work. The main contributions of this work are to provide researchers with an understanding of the application of UCD and PD with older people and to show the need to improve traditional design methods in order to create suitable applications for them.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Older adults can be physically unable to participate in study activities, which can lead to certain populations being left out or opting out of participation, limiting representation in design work.

“Older adults can be physically unable to participate in study activities ( e.g. , due to physical disability [35] or inability to reach study sites [14]), which can lead to certain populations being left out or opting out of participation, limiting representation in design work;”
  • Recent research on technology for older adults has successfully used PD to increase the engagement of this population in the design process.

“Recent research on technology for older adults has successfully used PD to increase the engagement of this population in the design process [14].”
  • Recent work has called for increased participation of older adults in the design of assistive technologies to increase their acceptance, usefulness, and adoption.

“Recent work has called for increased participation of older adults in the design of assistive technologies to increase their acceptance, usefulness, and adoption [4, 11, 14].”
  • Increased engagement can lead to higher acceptance of newer technology by better aligning the design of emerging technologies with the needs and expectations of their users.

“This increased engagement can lead to higher acceptance of newer technology by better aligning the design of emerging technologies with the needs and expectations of their users [14].”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
