Anisotropic conductivity over in-plane and thickness directions in Nafion-117

Abstract

Proton conductivity of Nafion-117 membranes in the direction of thickness was measured in , 30–90% relative humidity, by means of 2- and 4-probe methods in thickness direction developed in this group. Heavy conductivity anisotropy of was found over the in-plane and thickness directions for membranes pretreated by hot-pressing at high temperature of and pressures of 1200 and , respectively. On the other hand, no conductivity fade was found for membrane pretreated at in the thickness direction compared to that in the plane direction. Small angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed ion domains flattened along the in-plane direction and ordered along the thickness direction. The origin of the persistent conductivity anisotropy is believed to come from the maximized potential energy barrier for ion transport in interaggregate along the thinned thickness direction.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • At equal humidity, conductivity measured in-plane typically exceeds through-plane conductivity by a factor of 2.5 to 5.

“It has been reported that the in-plane proton conductivity is usually 2.5-5 times higher than the through-plane conductivity when measured at the same humidity condition [29,30].”

From Acid–base blend membranes consisting of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and 5-amino-benzotriazole tethered polysulfone for DMFC (2010) · cites this paper as [29]

The Abstract and p. A2277 report in-plane conductivity 2.5–5 times through-plane conductivity for Nafion-117 membranes hot-pressed at 150°C under 1200 or 600 kgf/cm², respectively. The Abstract also says there was no through-plane conductivity decrease relative to in-plane conductivity at 0 kgf/cm², so the source does not support presenting that ratio as the usual result regardless of pretreatment. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
