Myostatin in combination with creatine phosphokinase or albumin may differentiate patients with cirrhosis and sarcopenia

Alexopoulos, Theodoros, Vasilieva, Larisa, Kontogianni, Meropi D., Tenta, Roxane, Georgiou, Alexandra, Stroumpouli, Evangelia, Mani, Iliana, Alexopoulou, Alexandra·2021·American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology

Abstract

Serum levels of myostatin were significantly lower in cirrhotic patients with impaired skeletal mass index (SMI) and sarcopenia than those without. Serum levels of myostatin have a positive correlation with SMI. Myostatin levels are independently associated with sarcopenia, diagnosed according to the latest criteria, in patients with cirrhosis. Myostatin in combination with creatine phosphokinase or albumin have good accuracy excluding sarcopenia in patients with cirrhosis.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • MSTN may act as a common mediator linking skeletal muscle metabolic disorders and vascular pathology in a muscle-vascular axis.

“The clinical relevance of MSTN in cardiovascular disease is underscored by observations that atherosclerosis patients often suffer from sarcopenia, and MSTN levels independently correlate with low skeletal muscle mass, suggesting the existence of a “muscle-vascular axis” where MSTN may act as a common mediator linking skeletal muscle metabolic disorders and vascular pathology [61].”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
