4Q252 and the Flood Chronology of Genesis 7-8: a Text-Critical Solution

Hendel, Ronald S.·1995·Dead Sea Discoveries

Abstract

The recent preliminary publication in JJS of two columns of 4Q252 (= 4QCommGena, formerly 4QpGena), a sectarian rewriting of portions of Genesis, has occasioned some renewed interest in the problem of the flood chronology in Genesis 7-8.1 The readings in the Qumran fragment present a striking pattern of agreements and disagreements with the variant chronologies in the Masoretic Text (M) and the Septuagint (G), and correspond in some interesting respects with the dates in Jubilees (Jub.).2 Commentators on Genesis and on biblical chronology have long wrestled with the discrepancies among these variant chronologies, particularly with the puzzling chronology of M.3 The new data

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
