Journal Evolution and the Development of Marketing

Lehmann, Donald R.·2005·Journal of Public Policy & Marketing

Abstract

The main, original journals in marketing are Journal ofRetailing (1925) and Journal of Marketing (1937). Toan important extent, the field evolved from these prog-enitors. As Wilkie and Moore (2003) note, there was an explosion of new journals in the 1980s. This article consid-ers the nature of the journals that have emerged in market-ing and the order in which they were found to examine the pattern of growth in the field. This analysis includes only marketing journals. Thus, numerous outlets that publish marketing-related research are not included, such as Management Science, Journal of International Business Studies, and Sloan Management Review. Although these journals have a major impact on the field, they are largely forums for work in other areas and thus do not provide an unconfounded reflection of trends in marketing. The primary sources of journal articles and discussion are

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
