Abstract

When news of the sudden death of Stefano Zacchetti, Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Oxford, started spreading among friends, students and colleagues on the evening of 29 April 2020, there was perhaps no less room for disbelief than for utter shock. The sheer absurdity of an untimely end was taking from us, aged only 52, a magnificent scholar who had already given so much to Buddhist Studies, and who would have given so much more still. The vagaries of publishing schedules have made it so that this imperfect remembrance of him should be written when well over a year has passed since that tragic evening, and emotional tributes bearing witness to the enormous esteem and affection he enjoyed across and beyond the field have already appeared in other venues. 1 But as grief peters out in the callous distance of time for those who were privileged with his friendship and his teaching, stating the value of his scholarly life and legacy seems as important for them-for us-as for everyone else who can now only read his work.1. See the profile of Zacchetti's life and scholarship by Ester Bianchi for the AISC (Associazione Italiana Studi Cinesi) at https://aisc-org.it/stefano-zacchetti-1968-2020-contributo-agli-studi-buddhisti/ (in Italian), which also includes links to tributes and testimonies from several scholars and friends; and the intimate, moving portrait by Francesca Tarocco for the European Association of Chinese Studies at http://chinesestudies.eu/?p=4087.Both were published in May 2020, and are also available at https://glorisunglobalnetwork.org/in-memoriam-ste-fano-zacchetti/.See also the extensive discussion of Zacchetti's work in Buddhist Studies by Ji Yun 3.2 (2020): 226-290 (in Chinese), at https://glorisunglobalnetwork.org/chin-hijbs/e

Zacchetti's 2005 monograph showed that the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā was a comparatively late branch of a group of 'Larger Prajñāpāramitā' texts.

“show that the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā was but a relatively late offshoot of a family of 'Larger Prajñāpāramitā' texts.”

The Chinese translations of Buddhist texts made by An Shigao are the earliest such translations known from China.

In his posthumous 2021 monograph, Zacchetti concluded that the Da zhidu lun's glosses often anticipate readings found in later versions of the 'Larger Prajñāpāramitā'; on this basis he argued that the commentary points to lines of expansion within the scripture itself, which appears to take final shape after the transmission process.

“Zacchetti's impressively documented finding here is that in a significant number of cases, the glosses in the Da zhidu lun prefigure readings in later recensions of the”

§ Obituary for Stefano Zacchetti 1968-2020

Zacchetti recognized early that Chinese translation practice could recreate the process by which the Buddha's word was made into an inherently open text, thereby illuminating basic processes of Buddhist scriptural formation.

“Zacchetti had thus seen early on the extent to which this practice could rather reproduce on Chinese soil the very making of the Buddha's word as a constitutively open text, and therefore shed light on fundamental processes of scriptural formation in Buddhism.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-05.

Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-05.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
