Knowledge Base Completion: Baselines Strike Back

Open access

Abstract

Many papers have been published on the knowledge base completion task in the past few years. Most of these introduce novel architectures for relation learning that are evaluated on standard datasets such as FB15k and WN18.This paper shows that the accuracy of almost all models published on the FB15k can be outperformed by an appropriately tuned baseline -our reimplementation of the Dist-Mult model. Our findings cast doubt on the claim that the performance improvements of recent models are due to architectural changes as opposed to hyperparameter tuning or different training objectives. This should prompt future research to re-consider how the performance of models is evaluated and reported.

  • When carefully tuned, DistMult can still reach state-of-the-art performance.

“Despite this flaw, it has been demonstrated by Kadlec et al . [26] that, when carefully tuned, DistMult can still reach state-of-the-art performance.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
