Abstract

Several epidemiological studies propose the association of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to estimate the possible onset of systemic lipid peroxidation in RA patients and its relevance for pathophysiology and monitoring of RA. Seventy-three patients with RA and 73 healthy subjects were included in the study. Lipid peroxidation was estimated by the measurement of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), 4-hydroxyhexenal, malondialdehyde, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 4-oxononenal, and isoprostanes (8-isoPGF(2α)) levels. Cytosolic phospholipase A(2) (cPLA(2)), platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and vitamin E levels were also determined. In parallel, the plasma levels of phospholipid arachidonic acid (AA), linoleic acid (LA), and 4-HNE-protein adducts were monitored. Plasma of RA patients had increased vitamin E levels, but decreased GSH-Px activity and phospholipid AA and LA levels when compared to levels of the healthy subjects. The levels of aldehydes were significantly increased in the plasma of the RA patients and even more in urine. Significant increases in HNE-modified protein adducts was observed for the first time in plasma of RA patients, while the activities of PAF-AH and cPLA(2) were decreased. The 8-isoPGF(2α) levels were 9-fold higher in plasma and 3-fold higher in urine of RA patients and were related to the severity of disease. The levels of lipid peroxidation products in pla…

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • RA patients have higher levels of free and protein-bound 4-HNE in urine and plasma than control subjects.

“For instance, RA patients consistently revealed higher levels of free and protein-bound 4-HNE in urine and plasma compared to control subjects [177].”
  • Plasma and urine MDA levels are elevated in RA patients (n = 73 per group) compared with healthy subjects, as measured by GC-MS.

“| RA | Plasma, urine | Healthy subjects vs. RA patients (n = 73 per group) | GC-MS | Elevated levels of MDA in plasma and urine of RA patients | [177] |”
  • Plasma and urine levels of free and protein-bound 4-HNE are elevated in RA patients (n = 73 per group) compared with healthy subjects, as measured by GC-MS and ELISA.

    “| RA | Plasma, urine | Healthy subjects vs. RA patients (n = 73 per group) | GC-MS, ELISA | Elevated levels of free and protein-bound 4-HNE in RA patients | [177] |”
  • Luczaj et al. found elevated MDA levels in different specimens of RA and tick-borne encephalitis patients compared to controls using GC-MS.

“The GC-MS approach in the study by Luczaj and colleagues as mentioned above, has been also used for the measurement of MDA, revealing elevated levels in different specimens of RA and thick-born encephalitis patients compared to controls [177,178].”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
