Aliens and apocalypticism: Christian End Times and alien conspiracy theories
Open accessAbstract
[EMBARGOED UNTIL 8/1/2023] The new millennium has brought with it new forms of Christian premillennialist thought. The rise of the Internet and self-publishing has allowed for new strands of theology to develop and flourish without having to answer to a wider Christian body. Developing biotechnology has also raised concerns about the way technology can impact the individual. In particular, a certain milieu has been arguing that these evolving technologies are a spiritual threat to believers, potentially stripping them of their role as a child of God. This thesis will look at a handful of modern Christian authors who combine the Bible with apocrypha, books on the occult, and other sources rejected by fundamentalist Christians to argue that mankind is endangered by demonic forces who puppeteer society. They also warn about transhumanism, which they read as a dangerous ideology that threatens human's genetic purity. This thesis will look at their interpretation of the End Times, their theology of spiritual warfare, and their anti-transhumanism, as well as how they differ from the wider culture of premillennialist Christianity, placing them within a broader context of improvisational millennialism. It will argue that these ideas are a continuation of long-running trends in premillennialism, while highlighting the aforementioned differences. It primarily looks at the works of five authors, but also branches out to other members of this milieu.

TL;DR
This thesis examines a network of premillennialist Christian authors who fuse End Times prophecy with UFO conspiracy theories, spiritual warfare demonology, and opposition to transhumanism and genetic modification. It argues that despite their science-fiction framing, their ideas largely continue long-standing premillennialist traditions rather than constituting a wholly new religious movement.
Key findings
- The milieu is analyzed through five central authors — Thomas Horn, Cris Putnam, Derek Gilbert, Michael Heiser, and Timothy Alberino — who share broad beliefs but disagree on particulars, with no single leader dictating orthodoxy.
- The author argues the group only partially fits Michael Barkun's category of "improvisational millennialism": it draws on rejected, stigmatized, and occult knowledge, but its core remains recognizably premillennialist Christianity, with the Rapture–Tribulation–Millennium narrative intact.
- Distinctive departures from "traditional" premillennialism include relocating Armageddon from Megiddo to Mount Zion, reading Gog/Magog as Israel's Muslim neighbors rather than Russia, and identifying the Antichrist with Apollo/Apollyon/Osiris.
- The group treats aliens and UFOs as a demonic deception preparing humanity for a false savior, and treats transhumanism and germline engineering as threats to humanity's standing as God's children — a concern the author notes is shared by some liberal Christian and secular critics.
- Reach is documented rather than assumed: Alberino's *Birthright* has nearly a thousand Amazon reviews; a summer 2022 SkyWatchTV online conference featured over two dozen speakers; Prophecy Watchers videos range from the low thousands to around 100,000 views, with one February 2022 Alberino video at 229K; Jonathan Cahn's *The Harbinger* has almost ten thousand Amazon reviews and over 18,000 star ratings.
Methods
- A qualitative, text-based study of a self-identified "milieu" of premillennialist authors, organized into three chapters on End Times beliefs, spiritual warfare, and bioconservatism.
- Primary sources are the authors' books, essays, websites, and videos, supplemented by secondary scholarship (Boyer, Barkun, O'Donnell, O'Callaghan, Hughes, Thomas) and comparison with wider premillennialist literature.
- Analysis is comparative and contextual: the author places the milieu's claims against prior prophecy writing and against Barkun's framework of improvisational millennialism.
Limitations
- The paper states that gauging the milieu's influence on the wider world is difficult, since it operates mainly through independent presses and online video and is "a disconnected phenomenon."
- The paper notes that few scholars have studied this milieu, and that existing work concentrates on Horn rather than the other authors analyzed here.
- The paper acknowledges that some claims rest on thin evidence — for example, a single reported incident of a conference promoting Horn's book, and the author's own assumption that authors who never mention the Catholic Church hold similar views to those who do.
- Evident from the text: the study relies on published and online material rather than audience research, so claims about how readers receive or act on these ideas are inferred rather than measured; Heiser is repeatedly flagged as an outlier, which limits how representative the five-author sample is of a shared position.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
