Justification by Race: Wesley Swift’s White Supremacy and Anti-Semitic Theological Views in His Christian Identity Sermons
Open accessAbstract
This article explores the discourses of Minister Wesley Albert Swift (1913–1970), one of the original and leading proponents of Christian Identity, a racial theology movement which emerged in the United States after World War II. It is not the aim of this study to analyze the discourse of Christian Identity as an isolated element, but to understand its interrelation with the political-religious culture of the country during the 1950s and 1960s. Christian Identity rhetoric may be understood based on its socio-historical context. During the formulative years of Christian Identity, nuclear anxieties, along with the fear of Communist infiltration, were deeply present within the white supremacist and their anti-Semitic views. At the same time, the civil rights movement of African Americans stimulated violent white supremacy politics and rhetoric by the extreme right. Combining the white hegemonic fear of minority advances in American society, Christian Identity was created as a cult for the racist right. As such, it attempted to legitimized white supremacy and perpetuate the Judeo-Communist Conspiracy myth. Race — as a biological issue that reflects the spiritual essence of a person — is the central element of anthropology built by Christian Identity, which claims the white race was literally created in the image of God. Therefore, they argue, it is the only race predestined for salvation. As an expression of an extreme Calvinist world view, Wesley Swift constructed a Christian theology that ideologically unified different political strategies of the postwar extreme right, which continues to this day.

TL;DR
This article analyzes Wesley Albert Swift’s Christian Identity sermons, showing how he fused Calvinist double predestination with biological racism and anti-Semitism to make race the basis of salvation and to justify white theocracy, segregation, and violence. It situates Swift’s 1950s–1960s discourse in Cold War anti-Communism and white supremacist reaction to civil rights, arguing its paranoid style persists in later extreme-right politics and the January 6, 2021 Capitol assault.
Key findings
- Swift’s Christian Identity theology made race the determinant of salvation: “justification by race,” an extreme Calvinist double predestination in which whites are the only race predestined for salvation and Jews are the satanic “serpent seed.” He taught that whites were literally created in God’s image and that segregation is divine law.
- Swift’s anti-Semitism was spiritual and conspiratorial: Jews are “children of darkness” and offspring of Lucifer sown into every race; Communism is “Jewish Communism”; the Civil Rights Act was “conceived 100% by the Luciferian forces.” He called for armed millenarian struggle and extermination of the satanic enemy.
- The sermons reached small audiences: FBI archives report an average of between forty and one hundred people attending his sermons during the 1950s and 1960s. Swift’s institutions included the Anglo-Saxon Christian Congregation (1946), renamed Church of Jesus Christ Christian (1957), and the California Anti-Communist League (1950).
- The article links Swift’s theocratic anti-democratic rhetoric to later extreme-right formations such as Aryan Nations, Posse Comitatus, and militias, and to present-day QAnon/Capitol politics: SPLC extremist groups rose from approximately 623 at the end of 2016 to 838 by the end of 2020, and the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot killed five people.
Methods
- Qualitative discourse analysis of Wesley Swift’s sermons and transcripts, read in relation to the mainstream social and political culture of the 1950s and 1960s rather than as an isolated phenomenon.
- Sources include Swift sermon transcripts (38 Swift sermons are listed in the references), FBI archives on Swift and his audience size, and secondary historical and theoretical literature on Christian Identity, anti-Semitism, civil religion, and the paranoid style.
- The analysis traces theological themes—race, predestination, demonology, eschatology, and theocracy—and maps them onto Michael Barkun’s six types of Christian Identity political action.
Limitations
- The paper states no formal limitations section. It explicitly notes that “the origins of his different audiences cannot be determined.”
- Evident from the text: the study relies on archived and transcribed sermons and FBI records rather than a systematic sample or coding scheme; causal claims about Swift’s influence on later movements are interpretive and supported through secondary literature and discourse parallels.
- Evident from the text: the article focuses on Swift’s discourse and selected extreme-right trajectories, not on measuring reception among audiences or proving direct transmission to QAnon or Capitol actors.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-26.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-26.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
