Fuglede’s conjecture is false in 5 and higher dimensions

Abstract

We give an example of a set Ω ⊂ R 5 which is a finite union of unit cubes, such that L 2 (Ω) admits an orthonormal basis of exponentials { 1 |Ω| 1/2 e 2πiξ j •x : ξ j ∈ Λ} for some discrete set Λ ⊂ R 5 , but which does not tile R 5 by translations.This answers (one direction of) a conjecture of Fuglede [1] in the negative, at least in 5 and higher dimensions.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In LO experimental implementations, discrimination among CHMs can be accomplished via the observation of characteristic patterns of photonic quantum interference.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
