Abstract

We present a preview version of DeepSeek-V4 series, including two strong Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) language models -- DeepSeek-V4-Pro with 1.6T parameters (49B activated) and DeepSeek-V4-Flash with 284B parameters (13B activated) -- both supporting a context length of one million tokens. DeepSeek-V4 series incorporate several key upgrades in architecture and optimization: (1) a hybrid attention architecture that combines Compressed Sparse Attention (CSA) and Heavily Compressed Attention (HCA) to improve long-context efficiency; (2) Manifold-Constrained Hyper-Connections (mHC) that enhance conventional residual connections; (3) and the Muon optimizer for faster convergence and greater training stability. We pre-train both models on more than 32T diverse and high-quality tokens, followed by a comprehensive post-training pipeline that unlocks and further enhances their capabilities. DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Max, the maximum reasoning effort mode of DeepSeek-V4-Pro, redefines the state-of-the-art for open models, outperforming its predecessors in core tasks. Meanwhile, DeepSeek-V4 series are highly efficient in long-context scenarios. In the one-million-token context setting, DeepSeek-V4-Pro requires only 27% of single-token inference FLOPs and 10% of KV cache compared with DeepSeek-V3.2. This enables us to routinely support one-million-token contexts, thereby making long-horizon tasks and further test-time scaling more feasible. The model checkpoints are available at https://huggingface.co/collections/deepseek-ai/deepseek-v4.

  • Techniques such as grouped-query attention (GQA), multihead latent attention (MLA), and hybrid attention change the KV cache memory footprint but not the underlying management problem.

“Techniques such as grouped-query attention (GQA), multihead latent attention (MLA), and hybrid attention change the KV cache memory footprint but not the underlying management problem [21], [22].”

From Unified AI Gateway: A Framework for Joint Model Routing and KV Cache Management (2026) · cites this paper as [22]

Section 2.3.4 reports that hybrid attention reduces the KV cache footprint, while Section 3.5.1 describes the continuing need to manage its caches. But the paper does not establish the claim for MLA, and its “Challenges in Managing Hybrid Attention KV Cache” section says hybrid attention violates assumptions behind existing cache management and introduces distinct obstacles—not that the management problem remains unchanged. Page numbers are not provided in our copy. (LLM, conf=0.84)

  • Hybrid-attention models additionally require layer-aware cache indexing.

“Hybridattention models additionally require layer-aware cache indexing [22].”

From Unified AI Gateway: A Framework for Joint Model Routing and KV Cache Management (2026) · cites this paper as [22]

Section 3.5.1 says DeepSeek-V4 uses a customized KV-cache layout for its hybrid attention, and “Heterogeneous KV Entries” says cache sizes and policies vary across layers. These passages support a need for layer-aware cache management, but they do not specifically say that hybrid-attention models require layer-aware cache indexing. (LLM, conf=0.82)

  • A SignSGD step on the expert-side subproblem recovers the fixed-step sign update of auxiliary-loss-free balancing, up to the sign convention b = -β.

“A SignSGD step on this objective recovers the fixed-step sign update of auxiliary-loss-free balancing [30], up to the sign convention b = -β: the sign update retains only the direction of the load error in Eq. 27, whereas QB jumps directly to the exact coordinate minimizer of the same dual objective.”

From Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence (2026) · cites this paper as [30]

The Architecture section (page unavailable) says DeepSeek-V4 employs auxiliary-loss-free load balancing, and §4.2.2 specifies a bias update speed of 0.001. Our copy does not give the sign-update rule or establish that a SignSGD step recovers it under b = -β; the cited passages therefore support the identification of the balancing strategy, but not the claimed equivalence. (LLM, conf=0.78)

  • The footprint calibration reflects modern hybrid-attention models.

“The footprint calibration reflects modern hybrid-attention models [22], [50], [64].”
  • Kimi K3 adopts auxiliary-loss-free routing, with load balancing implemented by adding an expert-specific bias to the router score used for Top-k selection.

“Unlike auxiliary-loss-based routing [33], Kimi K3 adopts auxiliary-loss-free routing [30].Load balancing is implemented by adding an expert-specific bias b j to the router score used for Top-k selection.”

From Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence (2026) · cites this paper as [30]

Section 2 (Architecture; page unavailable) says DeepSeek-V4 uses an auxiliary-loss-free load-balancing strategy, but it does not say that Kimi K3 uses it. Searches for Kimi K3 and for an expert-specific bias added to Top-k router scores found no passage addressing those details. (LLM, conf=0.72)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
