Abstract

Abstract Myotonic dystrophy (MD) frequently involves the gastrointestinal tract, where it can manifest as chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO), particularly in adults. This manifestation is quite uncommon in children. We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with MD type 1 and CIPO, in which a pathologic assessment revealed an association with smooth muscle α-actin deficiency in the external muscular layer of the ileum, and with features of eosinophilic plexitis and eosinophilic muscle infiltration in the colon. In this peculiar case, the clinical aspects of CIPO might have been due to the involvement of several neuromuscular mechanisms. Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Severe phenotypes of myotonic dystrophy include pseudo-obstruction, including in pediatric cases with smooth muscle and myenteric pathology.

“Severe phenotypes include megacolon due to degenerative neuropathy of the myenteric plexus (Yoshida et al., 1988) and pseudo-obstruction, including in pediatric cases with smooth muscle and myenteric pathology (Ho et al., 2019; Pelizzo et al., 2018).”

Self-check

Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
