Abstract

An export of data from the Hesperomys Project. The Hesperomys Project is a database of taxonomy and nomenclature, focused on mammals but also covering some other groups, principally other fossil tetrapods. The database contains information such as: Taxonomic classification for all mammals, living and extinct References to original citations for the vast majority of names Type specimens and type localities for numerous names The full database is available online at hesperomys.com. This export contains: name.csv: Data on names, including taxonomic context, authority, citation, type locality, type specimen, and classification of the etymology. taxon.csv: Data on taxa, including classification and authority collection.csv: Data on collections that contain type specimens, including name, location, and number of type specimens in the database ce.csv: Data on published classifications that have been imported into the database The code used to generate the exports is on GitHub. • MDD2 includes a newly curated list of species-rank synonyms for every mammal species in the MDD, totaling 50,230 synonyms.

“MDD2 includes a newly curated list of species-rank synonyms—created in collaboration with Hesperomys (Zijlstra 2024)—for every mammal species in the MDD, totaling 50,230 synonyms.”

From How many mammal species are there now? Updates and trends in taxonomic, nomenclatural, and geographic knowledge (2025) · cites this paper as Zijlstra 2024

The dataset Description (no page number) identifies Hesperomys as a mammal-focused taxonomy and nomenclature database with data on names, supporting its identification in the citation. It does not state that Hesperomys collaborated on MDD2’s newly curated synonym list or verify the figure of 50,230 synonyms. (LLM, conf=0.82)

  • Integration of nomenclatural data from Hesperomys has greatly strengthened the MDD.

“In particular, integration of nomenclatural data from Hesperomys (Zijlstra 2024)—an online database cataloging the nomenclature of living and extinct animals, with a focus on mammals—has greatly strengthened the MDD.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
