Abstract

Kwestii stosunków Mieszka I z Włodzimierzem dotyczy pierwszy rozdział książki. Problematyce polityki wschodniej Bolesława poświęcony jest drugi rozdział pracy. Chrobry interweniował na Rusi trzykrotnie. Szczególnie spektakularny przebieg przyjęła wyprawa kijowska z 1018 r. Po śmierci Bolesława I inicjatywę w kontaktach sąsiedzkich przejął Jarosław Mądry. Stosunki dwóch pokoleń Piastów z tym monarchą relacjonuje trzeci rozdział pracy. Książę kijowski zaatakował Polskę, wykorzystując spory wewnątrz dynastii Piastów i jej kłopoty na arenie międzynarodowej. Następstwem kryzysu politycznego były straty terytorialne i obniżenie prestiżu Piastów w Europie środkowej. Nowe otwarcie w stosunkach polsko-ruskich zawdzięczamy temu samemu Jarosławowi Mądremu i następcy Mieszka, Kazimierzowi Odnowicielowi. Władcy obarczeni pokaźnym bagażem doświadczeń zawarli sojusz, oparty na związkach rodzinnych. Wypracowane wówczas przymierze kontynuowali Izjasław i Bolesław Szczodry. Opowiada o tym rozdział czwarty monografii. Bolesław trzykrotnie angażował się w domowe konflikty Rurykowiców. Niestety, alians krakowsko-kijowski stracił aktualność, gdy zginął Izjasław. Wsiewołod, brat i następca poległego nie wykazywał zainteresowania kontynuacją współpracy. Odnowieniu sojuszu poświęcony jest rozdział piąty książki. Zdaniem autora, inicjatywę zbliżenia z Rurykowicami podjął Władysław Herman, sukcesor Bolesława Szczodrego. Książę polski zyskał status rozjemcy w wewnętrznych rozgrywkach Rurykowiców, tworząc podstawę do długoletnich dobrych relacji sąsiedzkich z książętami kijowskimi i włodzimierskimi. Dzieje kontaktów Piastów i Rurykowiców w dobie rządów Zbigniewa i Bolesława, synów Hermana, porusza rozdział szósty. Autor omawia tu kulisy przymierzy i zaangażowanie stron w zmaganiach o władzę.

TL;DR

This monograph reconstructs Polish–Ruthenian political relations from the 10th to the mid-12th century, defending the 981 date for Vladimir the Great’s seizure of Czerwień and Przemyśl while rejecting the alleged 990 Polish–Ruthenian war as a later fabrication. It offers a source-critical reassessment of Bolesław Chrobry’s 1018 Kiev campaign and the subsequent Piast dynastic crisis, arguing that many historiographic reconstructions rest on conjecture rather than reliable evidence.

Key findings

  • The author upholds the *Primary Chronicle*’s dating of Vladimir’s expedition against the “Lachs” to 981, dismissing proposals to move it to 992 or 1012 (Kuczyński, Kowalczyk) as lacking source support; he also rejects the identification of Przemyśl with Peremyl.
  • The “Polish–Ruthenian war” of 990, known only from Tatishchev’s Joachim Chronicle, is judged a falsification built on misread references in the Hypatian Chronicle; the author concludes it has no evidentiary value.
  • For 1018, the author favours the Naruszewicz–Roepell sequence: Bolesław’s daughter married Sviatopolk before 1013, Bolesław’s 1013 expedition responded to Sviatopolk’s imprisonment, and the Kiev campaign ended with Sviatopolk’s rebellion and Bolesław’s annexation of the Cherven Towns.
  • In the 1031–1032 Piast crisis, the author argues that Wipo and the Hildesheim Annals refer to the same individual (either Bezprym or Otto); the historiographic division of roles between two brothers is a conjecture unsupported by the sources.

Methods

  • Historiographical and source-critical monograph analysing Polish, Ruthenian, German, Czech, Hungarian, and Scandinavian sources (e.g., *Primary Chronicle*, Thietmar, Gallus Anonymus, Wipo, Hildesheim Annals).
  • The study engages with 19th–21st century scholarship, evaluating competing reconstructions of events from 981 to the mid-12th century.
  • No new empirical data are introduced; the analysis is qualitative and interpretive.

Limitations

  • The author repeatedly states that sources are scarce, ambiguous, and contradictory, making many conclusions hypothetical (stated in the text).
  • Key questions—such as the location of Czerwień, the identity of the 1031 rebel, and the fate of Przedsława—remain unresolved for lack of evidence (stated in the text).
  • The book’s method often relies on rejecting alternative interpretations rather than providing positive proof, so some arguments remain conjectural (evident from the text).

“Takiego świadectwa, niestety, nie ma.Wipon, gdyż na niego powoływał się historyk, wspomniał tylko o jednym przedstawicielu Piastów.”
  • The paper relies on this without support.

  • The paper relies on this without support.

The silence of Wipo and the Hildesheim Annals about Rus involvement in the overthrow of Mieszko is probative that the Rus side was not involved.

“Konkluzja ta, jak sądzę, nabiera wagi w sytuacji, gdy taki sam wniosek wynika z lektury Powieści minionych lat.”
  • The authors state this as an assumption.

The scarcity of sources justifies keeping Wipo's account in research despite its controversial character.

“Wydaje się, że nie ma potrzeby, w sytuacji ubóstwa źródeł, wyłączania z badań przekazu, który mimo kontrowersyjności niesie za sobą istotne treści.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.

Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
