Thioketone‐Mediated Polymerization of Butyl Acrylate: Controlling Free‐Radical Polymerization via a Dormant Radical Species

Junkers, Tanja, Stenzel, Martina H., Davis, Thomas P., Barner‐Kowollik, Christopher·2007·Macromolecular Rapid Communications

Abstract

It is demonstrated by experiment and simulation that the commercially available thioketone 4,4‐bis(dimethylamino)thiobenzophenone is capable of controlling AIBN‐initiated bulk butyl acrylate polymerization at 80 °C. On the basis of molecular weight data and from monomer conversion versus time curves, the associated rate parameters are estimated. The addition rate coefficient, kad, for the reaction of a propagating chain with the thioketone is close to 10 6 L · mol−1 · s−1 and the fragmentation rate coefficient, kfrag, is around 10−2 s−1 giving rise to large equilibrium constants in the order of 10 8 L · mol−1. Furthermore, cross‐ and self‐termination of the dormant radical species are identified to be operational. magnified image

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
