Low Incidence of Pulmonary Aspiration During Upper Endoscopy in Patients Prescribed a Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Receptor Agonist

Anazco, Diego, Fansa, Sima, Hurtado, Maria Daniela, Camilleri, Michael, Acosta, Andres·2024·Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists have transformed the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. These agents have been associated with varying degrees of delay in gastric emptying, and a significant proportion of patients experience digestive side effects.1 There have been previous case reports of gastric retention of food and pulmonary aspiration during upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy in the setting of GLP-1 receptor agonist use 2; however, the cumulative incidence has not been previously explored.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In a Mayo Clinic analysis of 4134 GLP-1 RA users undergoing upper endoscopy, only two confirmed aspiration events were identified (4.8 events per 10,000 procedures), closely mirroring a historical rate of 4.6 per 10,000.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
