Sperm morphology as diagnosed by strict criteria: probing the impact of teratozoospermia on fertilization rate and pregnancy outcome in a large in vitro fertilization population
Open accessAbstract
Objective To investigate the predictive value of sperm morphology assessed by strict criteria on IVF outcome. Design Retrospective analysis of all IVF cycles (January 1987 to December 1992). Main outcome measures All patients were assigned to one of three groups based on sperm morphology: P-pattern ( 14% normal forms). Morphology pattern was related to other semen characteristics and IVF outcome. Results Despite corrective measures at oocyte insemination, the fertilization rate was significantly different among the three morphology groups, P Conclusions Strict morphology is an excellent biomarker of sperm fertilizing capacity, independent of motility and concentration. P-pattern sperm may denote a poorer prognosis for establishing a pregnancy, even after a satisfactory fertilization rate is achieved.

Publications examining the impact of morphology on spontaneous pregnancy, intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization reach varying conclusions.
“Despite efforts to standardize methodology for grading sperm morphology, publications examining the impact morphology on spontaneous pregnancy, intrauterine insemination, and in vitro fertilization reach varying conclusions (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
