Atmospheric water cycle and moisture fluxes in the West African monsoon: Mean annual cycles and relationship using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis.

Fontaine, Bernard, Roucou, Pascal, Trzaska, Sylwia·2003·Geophysical Research Letters

Abstract

Atmospheric water (Precipitation minus Evaporation, P‐E) and moisture fluxes from the NCEP/NCAR and observed rainfall data from the Climatic Research Unit are analyzed over the West African Monsoon region (WAM: 5°N–20°N; 18°W–18°E) on the period 1968–1998. The main results show that 1) P‐E averaged over the 15°N–20°N belt in July–September (JAS) is a better proxy of observed rainfall in Sudan‐Sahel (12°N–18°N) than NCEP/NCAR rainfall in this reanalysis; 2) part of the moisture fluxes vertically integrated in the layers 1000–300 hPa or 1000–925 hPa advected into WAM originate from the Mediterranean sea and Central Africa; 3) their interannual March–April and JAS variations, especially north of 20°N, present significant relationship with Sahelian P‐E in JAS; 4) at more local scales moisture advections and convergences are also significantly associated with observed Sudan‐Sahel rainfall and, in wet (dry) situations, with a clear dominance of westerly (easterly) anomalies in the moisture flux south of 15°N.

Claims the paper makes

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In cold years (dry years in the Gulf of Guinea region), the northward ITCZ movements can begin as early as February; warm years (wet years over the Gulf of Guinea) are characterized by a reduction of the southerly flow between April and June, followed by a rapid increase later in July.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
