Quasi-2D Fermi surface in the anomalous superconductor UTe2
Open accessAbstract
Abstract The heavy fermion paramagnet UTe2exhibits numerous characteristics of spin-triplet superconductivity. Efforts to understand the microscopic details of this exotic superconductivity have been impeded by uncertainty regarding the underlying electronic structure. Here we directly probe the Fermi surface of UTe2by measuring magnetic quantum oscillations in pristine quality crystals. We find an angular profile of quantum oscillatory frequency and amplitude that is characteristic of a quasi-2D Fermi surface, which we find is well described by two cylindrical Fermi sheets of electron- and hole-type respectively. Additionally, we find that both cylindrical Fermi sheets possess considerable undulation but negligible small-scale corrugation, which may allow for their near-nesting and therefore promote magnetic fluctuations that enhance the triplet pairing mechanism. Importantly, we find no evidence for the presence of any 3D Fermi surface sections. Our results place strong constraints on the possible symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UTe2.

The Fermi surface of UTe2 has three-dimensional characteristics, and the inverse-field periodicity implies a small orbit that has yet to be conclusively demonstrated.
“However, the Fermi surface has three-dimensional characteristics59–61, and the inverse-field periodicity implies a small orbit that has yet to be conclusively demonstrated.”
From Orphan high field superconductivity in non-superconducting uranium ditelluride (2024) · cites this paper as [59]
The Results describe pronounced undulations in UTe2’s Fermi sheets that can explain properties previously taken as evidence of 3D pockets. But the Discussion identifies the Fermi surface as quasi-2D and reports no evidence of 3D sections, so ‘three-dimensional characteristics’ is supported only in the limited sense of strong undulation. The citation is attached to that clause; the small-orbit statement is not attributed to this source. (LLM, conf=0.83)
Experimental — accuracy not yet measuredThis stabilization regime would, if accurate, indicate the existence of an even higher field phase beyond SCFP, located at approximately 90 T, and that the quantum limit field has somehow been lowered from the H > 100 T region inferred from recently reported quantum oscillation frequencies.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
