Smallest possible electromagnetic mode volume in a dielectric cavity

Coccioli, R., Boroditsky, M., Yablonovitch, E., Rahmat-Samii, Y., Kim, K.W.·1998·IEE Proceedings - Optoelectronics

Abstract

In photonic crystals, electromagnetic waves can be confined in all three dimensions – leading to very small mode volumes. A computational search has been made for the smallest electromagnetic mode volume which occurs in two-dimensional, dielectric photonic crystals slabs. The smallest mode volume found was V ≈ 2(λ/2n)3, where n is the refractive index. This small mode volume can lead to significant enhancement of spontaneous emission rates in semiconductor nano-cavities due to the Purcell effect.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • In conventional dielectric cavities, the effective volume cannot fall below the order of ∼(λc/2n)^3; in planar microcavities, the effective volume can be approximated by the effective cavity length.

“Since the effective volume (Veff ) depends on the electric field distribution (E ( → r ) ) and the relative permittivity of the medium ( ε ( → r ) ), in conventional dielectric cavities, it cannot fall below the order ∼ ( λ c /2 n ) 3 . However, the effective volume can be approximated by the effective cavity length (Leff ) in the case of a planar configuration of the microcavities [280-282]:”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
