Abstract

We report a new constraint on the variation of the fine-structure constant based on the analysis of 15 Si iv doublets selected from a ESO-UVES sample. We find = over a redshift range of which is consistent with no variation in α. This result represents a factor of three improvement on the constraint on based on Si iv doublets compared to the published results in the literature. The alkali doublet method used here avoids the implicit assumptions used in the many-multiplet method that chemical and ionization inhomogeneities are negligible and isotopic abundances are close to the terrestrial value.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The fit is usually not unique; this is not a problem when lines are not saturated, but it can increase the error on α_EM by a factor 2 in the case of strongly saturated lines (Chand et al. 2005).

“More important, the fit is usually not unique. This is not a problem when the lines are not saturated but it can increase the error on a EM by a factor 2 in the case of strongly saturated lines (Chand et al. 2005).”

Self-check

Percentages, sums and reported differences re-computed from the paper’s own numbers.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
