The electromagnetic helicity

Abstract

It is shown that the electromagnetic helicity, defined as the sum of the helicities of the electric and magnetic fields of an electromagnetic field in vacuum, is a constant of the motion. Furthermore, it is equal to twice the classical limit of the difference between the numbers of right- and left-handed photons, which establishes a close relationship between the wave and the particle meanings of the word helicity.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • A photon in a circularly polarised plane wave mode has helicity ±ħ, with the plus or minus signs referring to left- or right-handed circular polarisation, respectively, in the optics convention.

“The helicity of a photon in a circularly polarised plane wave mode is ± ℏ , the plus or minus signs referring to left- or right-handed circular polarisation, respectively, in the optics convention [12].”

From Optical helicity of interfering waves (2014) · cites this paper as [12]

Section 3 (page unavailable) relates electromagnetic helicity to photon handedness as H = 2ℏ(N_R − N_L), assigning a positive contribution to right-handed photons and a negative one to left-handed photons. That is the reverse of the claim’s plus-for-left, minus-for-right assignment. The paper does not identify its handedness labels as the optics convention. (LLM, conf=0.83)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
