Conservation laws and transverse motion of energy on reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves

Open access

Abstract

The conservation laws for the process of reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves on a plane interface of isotropic transparent media are determined. Using these laws, relations have been established between the transverse shift (TS) of a centre of gravity of reflected and transmitted wavepackets, the change of the normal component of the intrinsic Minkowski angular momentum of the electromagnetic field and the Abraham transverse momentum (or the transverse electromagnetic power flow (TPF)). The previous investigations of the TS and TPF phenomena are discussed from the point of view of conservation laws.

  • A similar interaction between the IOAM and EOAM occurs for vortex beams in inhomogeneous media, causing l-dependent transverse shifts at medium inhomogeneities (orbital-Hall effect).

“A quite similar interaction between the IOAM and EOAM (vortex and trajectory) occurs for vortex beams in inhomogeneous media 18,64,90- 95 . In this case, beams experience  -dependent transverse shifts at the medium inhomogeneities.”

In the discussion of relation (20) (page unavailable), the paper says that a change in intrinsic angular momentum during reflection or transmission produces a transverse shift and an opposing change in orbital angular momentum. Section 3 treats wavepackets at a plane dielectric interface. Our copy does not establish this specifically for vortex beams or report shifts dependent on their orbital-angular-momentum index ℓ. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
