The current status of galaxy formation

Open access

Abstract

Understanding galaxy formation is one of the most pressing issues in cosmology. We review the current status of galaxy formation from both an observational and a theoretical perspective, and summarize the prospects for future advances.

  • Galactic outflows are ubiquitous in galaxies containing active star formation or supermassive black hole activity.

“Galactic outflows are ubiquitous in galaxies containing active star formation or supermassive black hole activity.”

From The Fermi/eROSITA bubbles: a look into the nuclear outflow from the Milky Way (2024) · cites this paper as Silk & Mamon 2012

Section 4.2 discusses supernova-driven winds, and sections 2.7 and 4.5 discuss outflows driven by active supermassive black holes. These passages support the association with star formation and black-hole activity, but they do not establish that outflows are ubiquitous in galaxies with either activity. (LLM, conf=0.82)

  • The Milky Way is at the critical mass where both supernova and black hole feedback are expected to be active.

“Coincidentally, our Galaxy is at the critical mass where one expects both the SNe and black hole feedback to be active.”

From The Fermi/eROSITA bubbles: a look into the nuclear outflow from the Milky Way (2024) · cites this paper as Silk & Mamon 2012

Section 2.2 links supernova regulation to star-formation efficiency in local star-forming galaxies and identifies a similar efficiency in the Milky Way disk. Section 4.5 discusses black-hole feedback in massive elliptical galaxies, but our copy does not place the Milky Way at a critical mass where both forms of feedback are expected to be active. No page numbers were available in the indexed passages. (LLM, conf=0.82)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
