A nomenclature for restriction enzymes, DNA methyltransferases, homing endonucleases and their genes
Open accessAbstract
A nomenclature is described for restriction endonucleases, DNA methyltransferases, homing endonucleases and related genes and gene products. It provides explicit categories for the many different Type II enzymes now identified and provides a system for naming the putative genes found by sequence analysis of microbial genomes.

The RM system is an important immune system for bacteria that prevents the uptake of exogenous DNA and is largely variable in copy number and constitution.
“The RM system, an important immune system for bacteria that prevents the uptake of exogenous DNA, is largely variable in terms of copy number and constitution.45 , 46”
From Whole genomic DNA sequencing and comparative genomic analysis ofArthrospira platensis: high genome plasticity and genetic diversity (2016) · cites this paper as [45]
The Type I section describes cleavage of unmethylated DNA, supporting a defensive role, though it does not say R-M systems prevent DNA from entering a cell. The Hypothetical enzymes section identifies several different R-M systems in one bacterial genome, and the paper describes differing system compositions, but it does not establish that copy number and constitution are largely variable across bacteria. About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
