Coupled variations of fundamental couplings and primordial nucleosynthesis

Abstract

The effect of variations of the fundamental nuclear parameters on big-bang nucleosynthesis are modeled and discussed in detail taking into account the interrelations between the fundamental parameters arising in unified theories. Considering only $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, strong constraints on the variation of the neutron lifetime, neutron-proton mass difference are set. These constraints are then translated into constraints on the time variation of the Yukawa couplings and the fine structure constant. Furthermore, we show that a variation of the deuterium binding energy is able to reconcile the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ abundance deduced from the WMAP analysis with its spectroscopically determined value while maintaining concordance with D and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$. The analysis is strongly based on the potential model of Flambaum and Shuryak that relates the binding energy of the deuteron with the nucleon and $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ and $\ensuremath{\omega}$ mesons masses; however, we show that an alternative approach that consists of a pion mass dependence necessarily leads to equivalent conclusions.

  • The variations of mu and alpha_EM are correlated, still in a very model-dependent way, typically d mu/mu = -0.8 R d alpha_EM/alpha_EM + 0.6(S+1) dh/h, with S approximately 160.

“This would also imply that the variations of l and a EM are correlated, still in a very model-dependent way, typically one can conclude (Coc et al. 2007) that dl l ¼ À0:8R da EM a EM þ 0:6ðS þ 1Þ dh h ;”
  • The BBN parameters behave as DQ_np/Q_np = [0.1 + 0.7S - 0.6R] Da_EM/a_EM, Ds_n/s_n = [-0.2 - 2.0S + 3.8R] Da_EM/a_EM, and DB_D/B_D = [-6.5(1+S) + 18R] Da_EM/a_EM.

    “DQ np =Q np ¼½0:1 þ 0:7S À 0:6RDa EM =a EM ;ð122Þ Ds n =s n ¼½À0:2 À 2:0S þ 3:8RDa EM =a EM ;ð123Þ DB D =B D ¼½À6:5ð1 þ SÞ þ 18RDa EM =a EM ;ð124Þ”
  • Typical values in unification scenarios are (R,S) = (26,160) and (109.4,0) in dilaton type models.

“Their typical value in unification scenarios are thought to be ðR; SÞ ¼ ð26; 160Þ (Langacker et al. 2002;Coc et al. 2007) and (109.4,0) in dilaton type models (Nakashima et al. 2010).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
