PHOTOSENSITIZATION OF PYRIMIDINES BY 2‐METHYLNAPHTHOQUINONE IN WATER: A LASER FLASH PHOTOLYSIS STUDY

Fisher, Gordon J., Land, Edward J.·1983·Photochemistry and Photobiology

Abstract

2‐Methylnaphthoquinone (MQ) has been excited in water with a 20 ns laser flash at 353 nm and the resultant transient species have been observed optically. Triplet‐state MQ (3 MQ) decays on a sub‐microsecond time scale. It has been characterized in terms of its absorption spectrum and quantum yield. Rate constants have been measured for the decay of 3 MQ in infinitely dilute solution, for self‐quenching by ground‐state MQ, and for reactions of 3 MQ with oxygen, thymine, uracil, 6‐methyluracil, and orotic acid. The interaction of 3 MQ with pyrimidines involves charge transfer to give the pyrimidine cation radical and the MQ : anion radical. These reactions are discussed in relation to the mechanism of pyrimidine photooxidation sensitized by MQ.

This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • A few photosensitizers, including anthraquinone, benzophenone, 1,4-dimethyl-2-naphthoquinone and riboflavin, can abstract one electron from adenine and pyrimidine bases in addition to guanine.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
