TiO 2 Photocatalysis Causes DNA Damage via Fenton Reaction-Generated Hydroxyl Radicals during the Recovery Period

Abstract

Here, we show that resistance of Escherichia coli to TiO 2 photocatalysis involves defenses against reactive oxygen species. Results support the idea that TiO 2 photocatalysis generates damage which later becomes deleterious during recovery. We found this to be partly due to DNA attack via hydroxyl radicals generated by the Fenton reaction during recovery.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • UVA-excited TiO2 generates singlet oxygen, superoxide, and highly reactive hydroxyl radicals.

“UVA-excited TiO 2 has been shown to generate 1 O 2 (189), O 2) and also highly reactive • OH either through reduction of surface hydroxyl group by valence bond holes (190) or by Fenton type reactions (191).”
  • Photoexcited TiO2 exhibits strong bactericidal activity and genotoxicity on various cells mostly as result of oxidative stress.

“Photoexcited TiO 2 exhibits strong bactericidal activity (191)(192)(193)(194) and genotoxicity (195)(196)(197)(198) on various cells as mostly the result of oxidative stress.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
