On the effect of high energy radiation to polymers I. Cross-linking and degradation

Saito, Osamu·1958·Journal of the Physical Society of Japan

Abstract

Integro-differential equations are obtained, which describe the variation of molecular weight distributions in a polymer substance caused by irradiation. The solutions of these equations give the gel point and the average molecular weights. In the case of cross-linking without cyclization, the results agree with those obtained by other authors. The problems involving cyclization and branching are also solved, showing that the gel formation is retarded by cyclization and that the weight average branching number diverges at the gel point, while the number average branching number does not. As for degradation, the molecular weight distributions for an arbitrary radiation dose are obtained, and it is shown that for any initial distribution the final molecular weight distribution becomes Poisson-like. The problem which deals with the case where cross-linking and degradation coexist is also discussed, and it is shown that for any initial distribution the gel formation occurs only when the ratio of the two probabilities concerning degradation and cross-linking is smaller than 4.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Calculations based on equations [54] demonstrate that the change of molecular mass corresponding to chain scission in deformed samples is negligibly small: for high strain e=2.1, Mn/Mno=0.998 and Mw/Mwo=0.993.

“Calculations based on the above equations demonstrate that the change of molecular mass corresponding to chain scission in deformed samples is negligibly small: for the high strain e ¼ 2.1 the calculated ratio M n /M no ¼ 0.998 while M w /M wo ¼ 0.993.”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
