Transplantation for multiple myeloma: who, when, how often?

Abstract

Controversy in hematologyTransplantation for multiple myeloma: who, when, how often? High-dose therapy in multiple myeloma Joan Blade ´The outcome of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) is unsatisfactory, with a median survival of less than 3 years.1,2 The prospects for survival at 10 years are poor with conventional chemotherapy.3,4 The limited efficacy of conventional treatment prompted the introduction of high-dose therapy (HDT) followed by stem cell support in an attempt to achieve a greater tumor reduction with longer disease-free and overall survival (OS).Not all patients in whom HDT is feasible obtain a significant benefit from the procedure.

  • ASCT improves median overall survival in multiple myeloma by about 12 months.

“ASCT improves median OS in multiple myeloma by approximately 12 months.125–128”

From Multiple myeloma: 2024 update on diagnosis, risk-stratification, and management (2024) · cites this paper as [127]

The take-home message (p. 7) reports a 12–15-month survival benefit from transplantation, and Consolidation of initial therapy (p. 3) reports 12 months longer overall survival in the high-dose treatment group of the MRC analysis. The paper limits its clear survival-benefit conclusion to patients younger than 60–65 with reasonable renal function; the citing sentence omits that qualification and generalizes to multiple myeloma patients overall. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
