Classics from IJGIS: Twenty years of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science and Systems
Abstract
The past 20 years can be regarded as the adolescence of geographic information science (GIS), as it grew from a burgeoning area of study into a mature and thriving field. During those two decades, the International Journal of Geographic Information Science (formerly Systems) (IJGIS) was one of the most prominent academic guiding forces in GIScience

The wide use of the SLEUTH cellular automata model provides evidence that cellular automata is a technique worth considering to predict and simulate urban growth in a smart city context.
“The wide use of the SLEUTH cellular automata model (e.g.[95,96] for reviews of cellular automata applications) provides evidence that cellular automata is a technique worth considering to predict and simulate urban growth in a smart city context.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
