The Cosmological Constant
Open accessAbstract
This is a review of the physics and cosmology of the cosmological constant. Focusing on recent developments, I present a pedagogical overview of cosmology in the presence of a cosmological constant, observational constraints on its magnitude, and the physics of a small (and potentially nonzero) vacuum energy.

A mechanism for such an instability may be provided by the small positive cosmological constant that has apparently been discovered.
“A mechanism for such an instability may be provided by the small positive cosmological constant that has apparently been discovered [16, 17, 18].”
From Spontaneous inflation and the origin of the arrow of time (2004) · cites this paper as [18]
The Observational Tests section says evidence had led many experts to believe in a positive vacuum energy, supporting the claim’s cautious reference to an apparently discovered cosmological constant. The Introduction describes the Einstein static universe as unstable to small deviations, but does not say that the observed small positive cosmological constant provides a mechanism for the instability meant by the citing sentence. “In the presence of a small positive vacuum energy (such as seems to exist in our universe [16, 17, 18]), systems will tend to initially empty out to an approximate de Sitter vacuum.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
