Tras las huellas del príncipe Ahmose-Sapair

Abstract

He was worshipped soon after his death and was regarded as a memorable member of the royal family in Thebes for around five centuries. While his ancestry, remembrance and worship have been the subject of several studies, the location of his tomb has not been discussed in depth, despite the fact that it appears to be a significant aspect in his posthumous cult. This matter is hereby addressed, re-examining the data from earlier excavations and in the light of recent discoveries made by the Spanish mission working in Dra Abu el-Naga North, southwest of the open courtyard of the tomb-chapel of Djehuty (TT 11).Keywords: Ahmose-Sapair; necropolis; Dra Abu el-Naga; ancient Thebes; Egypt

TL;DR

The article reviews earlier documentation and new Spanish excavations in Sector 10 at Dra Abu el-Naga to argue that the tomb of Prince Ahmose-Sapair should be located at the southern end of Dra Abu el-Naga Norte, a few meters southwest of the courtyard of Djehuty (TT 11). The evidence is circumstantial because the shafts were looted and refilled in antiquity.

Key findings

  • The Spanish mission found an adobe offering chapel (UE 1002; 2.20 x 2.20 m, 0.90 m high) with six wooden shabtis (three inscribed), one offering formula naming Ahmose, and a linen inscribed “Lino-daiu para Ahmose-Sapair”; nearby shaft UE 1010 (mouth 2.49 x 0.83 m; depth 5.70 m; chamber 2.55 x 1.50 m, height 1.20 m) yielded another shabti with Ahmose’s name, human remains of at least three infants and three adults, and a limestone stela fragment (24 x 14.5 x 8 cm) naming Djehutyhotep, Wuadjmose and Amondediu.
  • A large votive ceramic deposit of at least 2,000 vessels over more than 8 x 5 m, mostly late 17th/early 18th Dynasty, marks a floor level ca. 1600/1550 BC, 2.5 m above Djehuty’s courtyard floor; nearby were two child rishi coffins on the ground, one 96 x 29 x 28.5 cm containing a child who died at about 4 years.
  • Other Sector 10 shafts: UE 1005 (mouth 2.46 x 0.85 m; depth 5.50 m; two chambers) produced a scarab inscribed “The son of the king of Upper and Lower Egypt”; UE 110 (mouth 2.80 x 1.05 m; depth 6.56 m) produced an obelisk fragment naming prince Intefmose, son of King Sobekemsaf, and a statue head (23 x 24.5 x 16 cm).
  • The author concludes Ahmose-Sapair’s tomb likely lies at the southern end of Dra Abu el-Naga Norte, a few meters southwest of TT 11, but the data are indications, not conclusive proof; the tomb could belong to a contemporary or slightly later namesake.

Methods

  • Archaeological excavation by the Spanish mission in “Sector 10” at Dra Abu el-Naga, southwest of TT 11, begun in January 2011 after modern houses were demolished in 2006 and the concession extended in 2008.
  • Review of earlier excavations and documents: Bouriant 1886, Spiegelberg/Newberry/Northampton 1889–1899, papyrus Abbott, royal cache DB320, and objects in museums.
  • Analysis of stratigraphy, ceramics (by Mª José López Grande and Elena de Gregorio), human remains, radiographs, and inscribed objects.

Limitations

  • The paper states that ancient looting, disturbed terrain and materials, and later refilling of the shaft make the acquired data “meros indicios,” questionable and circumstantial, not conclusive proof.
  • The author states the complex may have belonged to a person named Ahmose but not necessarily the venerated prince Ahmose-Sapair; it could be a contemporary or slightly later namesake.
  • The paper notes the tomb may seem too humble for a royal family member venerated for 500 years, though other Sector 10 shafts are equally simple. Evident from the text: some objects’ original context is uncertain, the obelisk is lost, and radiographs could not determine sex or cause of death of the child.

Shortly after his burial, prince Ahmose-Sapair became an object of cult and devotion, receiving offerings and being honored in commemorative stelae by other individuals of his time and later generations.

“muy poco tiempo después de su enterramiento el príncipe fue objeto de culto y devoción, recibiendo ofrendas y siendo honrado en estelas conmemorativas de otros individuos de la época y de generaciones posteriores”

    Interpretationreasoning

The discovery of two infant coffins deposited on the ground, among chapels and tombs of princes, may indicate that this area of the necropolis was especially dedicated to infant burials at the end of Dynasty XVII and/or beginning of Dynasty XVIII, perhaps associated with the funerary monument of an illustrious person of the time who also died as a child, as seems to have been the case of prince A姆

“El hallazgo de dos ataúdes infantiles depositados sobre el suelo, entre capillas y tumbas de príncipes, tal vez sea un indicio que pueda estar indicando que esta zona de la necrópolis estuviera especialmente dedicada a enterramientos infantiles a finales de la dinastía XVII y/o comienzos de la XVIII”

    • Rests on an assumption: Prince Ahmose-Sapair died as a child.
  • May combine two claims.

    Interpretationreasoning

Ahmose-Sapair's location in this specific place of the necropolis is explained by the presence of the mud-brick pyramids of dynasty XVII kings and the large double tomb higher on the hill.

“La ubicación de Ahmose-Sapair en este lugar concreto de la necrópolis tiene su razón de ser, no sólo porque en esta zona se levantaban las pirámides de adobe de los principales reyes de la dinastía XVII, Sobekemsaf y sus dos hijos Intef, sino también porque un poco más arriba en la colina se construyó una gran tumba doble”

It is very probable that this was its original location and position, because stones were intentionally placed touching the sides so that it would lean and remain in that position.

“Es muy probablemente que esa fuera su ubicación y posición original, puesto que se colocaron intencionadamente unas piedras tocando los laterales para que se apoyara y pudiera mantenerse en esa posición.”

    Interpretationreasoning

The pottery assemblage clearly constitutes a votive deposit, very different from ceramic accumulations around funerary shafts caused by looting.

  • Probably not a substantial claim: may not pass S3 (load-bearing).

    Interpretationreasoning

Another possible explanation for the large votive pottery deposit is that it was associated with the whole area and not with a specific person and his funerary monument converted into a sanctuary.

Ahmose-Sapair came to be considered almost a 'saint' of the necropolis, an intermediary and benefactor of the other deceased, and a distinguished member of the royal family.

In ancient Egypt, the size and complexity of a funerary monument does not necessarily correspond to or reflect the status of its owner, nor the perception and relationship that contemporaries and later generations established with him.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-17.

Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-17.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
