Animal Rights, Human Rights: Ecology, Economy, and Ideology in the Canadian Arctic

Wenzel, George·1991·University of Toronto Press eBooks

Abstract

This book is both a careful academic study and a disturbing comment on how environmental activity may oppress a whole society, which raises serious questions about the motives and methods of the animal rights' movement in a much wider context than the case here studied.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Whalers in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway typically exploit multispecies niches, which give people flexibility in their adaptations to the environment.

“it can be argued that whalers in Alaska (Alaska Consultants Inc., 1984), Canada (Wenzel, 1991), Greenland (Kapel and Petersen, 1982), Iceland (Piilsson, 1992), and Norway (ISG, 1992) typically exploit multispecies niches, which give people flexibility in their adaptations to the environment.”
  • Costs of the anti-whaling campaign are minimal to environmental and animal rights groups because it attacks people in marginal regions in the North who are largely unable to fight back.

“And costs are minimal to the environmental and animal rights groups in that the anti-whaling campaign attacks people residing in marginal regions in the North, largely unable to fight back, as does the anti-sealing campaign (Herscovici, 1985;Wenzel, 1991).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
