Abduction: The Logic of Discovery of Grounded Theory

Reichertz, Jo·2007·The SAGE Handbook of Grounded Theory

Abstract

This essay is a contribution to the question whether grounded theory methodology (in the variant of STRAUSS & CORBIN) contains an abductive research logic as developed in the work of Charles Sanders PEIRCE. After going through the works of STRAUSS and CORBIN I answer the question with a resounding yes. But it does not only contain the logic of abductive reasoning but also that of qualitative induction. Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • The importance of Pragmatism for GTM was noticed by some of its adherents, particularly in the German-speaking world (Joas 1987, Reichertz 2007, Kelle 2007, Strübing 2007).

“The importance of Pragmatism for GTM was noticed by some of its adherents, particularly those in the German-speaking world such as Hans JOAS (1987), Jo REICHERTZ (2007), Udo KELLE (2007) and Jörg STRÜBING (2007).”

  • Reichertz (2007) argues that the term abduction combines the rational and the imaginative aspects of research, and this is precisely what theoretical sensitivity is meant to encompass.

  • Reichertz (2007) makes the point even more forcefully in discussing the necessity for understanding theoretical sensitivity as a form of abduction, since the result is to bring together the logic of discovery with the logic of justification within the context of methodological considerations.

  • As Reichertz points out, GTM is not simply inductive as this would merely lead to a re-casting of the data 'on a more abstract level'.

“As REICHERTZ points out, GTM is not simply inductive as this would merely lead to a re-casting of the data "on a more abstract level" (2007, p.223).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
