Leadership and the Challenges of Development in Post-Conflict African States
Open accessAbstract
Leadership transition represents a crucial element in post-conflict development in African states. This paper explores the intricate relationship between leadership and development in post-conflict contexts. It examines the challenges faced by leaders in these states, examining the post-conflict states of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through a comparative approach. To achieve this objective, the employed qualitative approach that offers in-depth exploration of leadership effectiveness, revealing social, political, and economic dynamics often overlooked in quantitative studies, enhancing understanding of development outcomes. The argument in this paper is anchored on transformational leadership theory. The paper demonstrated that leadership plays a critical role in post-conflict African states, influencing the outcome of development efforts. Effective leaders prioritise good governance, accountability, and inclusivity, while ineffective leaders prioritize personal interests, ethnic and tribal considerations, or rent-seeking. The case studies of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) illustrate the importance of leadership in promoting economic growth, social stability, and peace in post-conflict African states. This paper contributes to the existing literature on post-conflict reconstruction by highlighting the challenges of leadership in post-conflict African states and the strategies that leaders can employ to overcome these obstacles. It paper recommends post-conflict states prioritise good governance, establish strong institutions for economic growth and social stability, prioritize inclusive decision-making, support women's empowerment, and address corruption and nepotism by establishing anti-corruption institutions and promoting merit-based decision-making.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-11.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-11.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
