PaLM 2 Technical Report
Open accessAbstract
We introduce PaLM 2, a new state-of-the-art language model that has better multilingual and reasoning capabilities and is more compute-efficient than its predecessor PaLM. PaLM 2 is a Transformer-based model trained using a mixture of objectives. Through extensive evaluations on English and multilingual language, and reasoning tasks, we demonstrate that PaLM 2 has significantly improved quality on downstream tasks across different model sizes, while simultaneously exhibiting faster and more efficient inference compared to PaLM. This improved efficiency enables broader deployment while also allowing the model to respond faster, for a more natural pace of interaction. PaLM 2 demonstrates robust reasoning capabilities exemplified by large improvements over PaLM on BIG-Bench and other reasoning tasks. PaLM 2 exhibits stable performance on a suite of responsible AI evaluations, and enables inference-time control over toxicity without additional overhead or impact on other capabilities. Overall, PaLM 2 achieves state-of-the-art performance across a diverse set of tasks and capabilities. When discussing the PaLM 2 family, it is important to distinguish between pre-trained models (of various sizes), fine-tuned variants of these models, and the user-facing products that use these models. In particular, user-facing products typically include additional pre- and post-processing steps. Additionally, the underlying models may evolve over time. Therefore, one should not expect the performance of user-facing products to exactly match the results reported in this report.

BIG-Bench Mistake contains 2186 sets of CoT-style traces generated with PaLM 2 Unicorn and annotated with the location of the first logical error.
“BIG-Bench Mistake contains 2186 sets of CoTstyle traces. Each trace is generated with PaLM 2 Unicorn (Anil et al., 2023), and annotated with the location of the first logical error.”
From LLMs cannot find reasoning errors, but can correct them given the error location (2024) · cites this paper as Anil et al., 2023
The Introduction identifies PaLM 2 as a model family, and the Model Card (Additional information; page unavailable) describes its small, medium, and large variants. Our copy does not identify a variant called “Unicorn,” so it supports the PaLM 2 identification but not the specific model name. The citation is attached to the model name, not to the citing paper’s dataset count or annotations. (LLM, conf=0.82)
Experimental — accuracy not yet measuredPaLM 2 performs poorly on the selected tasks.
“These tasks are selected because 1)Anil et al. (2023) demonstrate that PaLM 2 performs poorly on these tasks, so it is likely to generate mistakes in CoT traces;”
From LLMs cannot find reasoning errors, but can correct them given the error location (2024) · cites this paper as Anil et al., 2023
The citing sentence does not identify the selected tasks, so they cannot be matched to the report’s evaluations. The report’s §4.3 Reasoning and BIG-Bench Hard sections describe improvements over PaLM, but the passages found do not establish that PaLM 2 performs poorly on the citing paper’s selected tasks. I searched for poor performance and errors in reasoning and chain-of-thought tasks. (LLM, conf=0.72)

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
