Humanity's Last Exam

Abstract
Benchmarks are important tools for tracking the rapid advancements in large language model (LLM) capabilities. However, benchmarks are not keeping pace in difficulty: LLMs now achieve over 90\% accuracy on popular benchmarks like MMLU, limiting informed measurement of state-of-the-art LLM capabilities. In response, we introduce Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), a multi-modal benchmark at the frontier of human knowledge, designed to be the final closed-ended academic benchmark of its kind with broad subject coverage. HLE consists of 2,500 questions across dozens of subjects, including mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences. HLE is developed globally by subject-matter experts and consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions suitable for automated grading. Each question has a known solution that is unambiguous and easily verifiable, but cannot be quickly answered via internet retrieval. State-of-the-art LLMs demonstrate low accuracy and calibration on HLE, highlighting a significant gap between current LLM capabilities and the expert human frontier on closed-ended academic questions. To inform research and policymaking upon a clear understanding of model capabilities, we publicly release HLE at https://lastexam.ai.

Benchmarks are often adversarially selected for tasks that current models struggle with compared to humans, biasing the comparison to human performance.
“Second, benchmarks are often adversarially selected for tasks that current models struggle with compared to humans, 1 biasing the comparison to human performance.”
From Measuring AI Ability to Complete Long Software Tasks (2025) · cites this paper as [5]
The Methods > Dataset section says HLE accepts questions designed to stump current models, and Evaluation > Quantitative results says its low model scores are partly by design. The paper presents HLE as a comparison with human expertise, but it does not establish that benchmarks are often selected this way or explicitly conclude that such selection biases human-performance comparisons. Page numbers are unavailable in our copy. (LLM, conf=0.85)
Experimental — accuracy not yet measuredSome deep research benchmarks focus on challenging but closed-ended tasks whose solutions can be checked by a deterministic algorithm against the ground truth.
“Some deep research benchmarks focus on challenging but closed-ended tasks whose solutions can be checked by a deterministic algorithm against the ground truth (e.g., Mialon et al. [2023], Phan et al. [2025], Wei et al. [2025], Krishna et al. [2024], Gupta et al. [2026]).”
From DRACO: a Cross-Domain Benchmark for Deep Research Accuracy, Completeness, and Objectivity (2026) · cites this paper as Phan et al. [2025]
The Dataset > Collection section (page unavailable) describes HLE as challenging, closed-ended questions with specified correct answers, and says exact-match answers are kept short to support automatic grading. But Evaluation > Setup (page unavailable) says the paper uses o3-mini as a judge to handle equivalent answer formats; it does not establish that all solutions can be checked by a deterministic algorithm. (LLM, conf=0.88)
Experimental — accuracy not yet measuredUsing QA datasets as evaluation metrics for DRAs neither aligns with real-world DRA applications nor comprehensively assesses their broader capabilities.
“Among these works, some utilize QA datasets [21, 16, 30] as evaluation metrics; however, this approach neither aligns with real-world DRA applications nor comprehensively assesses their broader capabilities.”

Search-time data contamination can leak answers; e.g., Humanity's Last Exam leaked 3% of their answers on HuggingFace alone.
“This problem is exacerbated by search-time data contamination, where challenging benchmarks such as Humanity's Last Exam (Phan et al., 2025) leaked 3% of their answers on HuggingFace alone (Han et al., 2025).”

Prior to recent benchmarks specifically designed for evaluating information retrieval capabilities, search-based agents were typically evaluated using conventional capability benchmarks, including SimpleQA and HLE.

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
