Role-Augmented Intent-Driven Generative Search Engine Optimization
Open accessAbstract
Generative search engines (GSEs), which combine large language models (LLMs) with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), are reshaping how users access Web information and making source visibility and influence in generated responses new optimization objectives. Existing generative search engine optimization (G-SEO) methods seek to improve content visibility, but many rely on direct access to target queries or GSE feedback elicited by those queries. However, Web content is typically optimized and published before future user queries are known, making G-SEO without access to target queries or their associated feedback an important yet underexplored problem. To address this, we propose RAID, a Role-Augmented Intent-Driven G-SEO method that operates without access to target queries or query-dependent GSE feedback. RAID infers a primary retrieval intent from source content, refines it through 4W multi-role deep reflection on prospective searchers' information needs, and uses both the primary and refined intents to jointly plan and rewrite source content. We further extend GEO-BENCH with diverse topic-related query variants, using both the original queries and their variants exclusively for evaluation to assess generalization to queries unseen during optimization. Across 100 samples and 500 evaluation queries, RAID achieves Relative Improvement Scores (RIS) of 3.00\% for Objective Overall and 1.32\% for Subjective Average, exceeding the best corresponding results among the nine predefined GEO rewriting strategies by 1.31 and 0.74 percentage points, respectively. With an optimization considered effective when $\mathrm{RIS}>0$, its effective optimization rates for Objective Overall and Subjective Average average 58.0\%, exceeding the highest corresponding average among the predefined strategies by 4.5 percentage points.

TL;DR
The paper proposes RAID G-SEO, a role-augmented, intent-driven four-stage framework for optimizing content visibility in black-box generative search engines. It extends GEO-BENCH with query variants and introduces G-EVAL 2.0, reporting that intent-guided optimization improves subjective and objective visibility over nine GEO baselines.
Key findings
- RAID G-SEO achieved Objective Impression Improvement Overall of 15.79 and Subjective Impression Improvement Average of 13.27, corresponding to relative gains of 57.98% and 286.91% over the baseline average; its subjective average exceeds the second-best method by 61.35%.
- Over 500 optimization task samples, RAID G-SEO averaged 288 effective optimizations and a 57.6% effective optimization rate, 1.0 percentage point above the second-best terminology-based method at 56.6%.
- Ablation showed all four stages contributed: Simple G-SEO w/o Step scored 7.97 objective / 6.51 subjective, Simple G-SEO w/ Step 15.81 / 11.29, ID G-SEO w/o Summ. 16.69 / 11.29, ID G-SEO w/ Summ. 19.51 / 12.95, and full RAID G-SEO 15.79 / 13.27; ID G-SEO w/ Summ. had the best joint subjective-objective result, while full RAID G-SEO improved subjective metrics but showed some objective degradation.
- Role analysis collected 8,030 role instances across 219 role types; Knowledge Producers/Researchers and Civic Everyday Actors together accounted for over two-thirds, while Health and Care Stakeholders and Cultural and Creative Professionals represented only 6% and 3%, respectively; over 80% of optimization steps targeted content quality, and Content Enrichment and Expansion accounted for more than 30% of actions.
Methods
- The GSE environment was simulated as a single-turn response generation task with five relevant content sources per query, using GLM-4-9B-0414; baselines were the nine GEO optimization methods, and evaluation used Position-Adjusted Word Count (PAWC) and Subjective Impression metrics.
- The dataset extended GEO-BENCH by using GPT-4 to generate four semantically related variants per original query; variants shared only 1–2 keywords with the original and had average cosine similarity 0.33, with human validation on 20% of samples yielding scores ≥ 3 and Cohen’s Kappa of 0.62; each experiment randomly selected 100 samples.
- RAID G-SEO uses a four-stage pipeline—content summarization, intent inference and refinement, step planning, and content rewriting—with a 4W multi-role deep reflection module (Who, What, Why, How); G-EVAL 2.0 uses a 0–5 rubric, prompt-generate-prompt with GPT-4o, and scoring via GLM-4-9B.
Limitations
- The paper states that overly specific intents may lead to rewrites that overfit to particular queries and reduce generalizability; prompt-engineering-based intent extraction limits granularity control and contextual consistency; and the method handles plain text only, excluding visual or multimodal elements such as images, diagrams, or tables.
- The paper states that results are averaged over randomized runs and that no additional statistical significance tests are performed, so the work examines feasibility and effectiveness rather than statistically generalizable conclusions.
- Evident from the text: evaluation is simulated, the query is hidden in the black-box setting, and the failure case shows that high semantic overlap with competing sources can prevent visibility gains; generalized intent may remain domain-bound and misaligned with the query.

G-EVAL citation points to DeepThink
MinorThe text cites reference 15 for G-EVAL, but entry 15 is DeepThink; the G-Eval paper appears as entry 16.

“15. Li, Y.; Luo, M.; Gong, Y.; Lin, C.; Jiao, J.; Liu, Y.; and Huang, K. 2025. DeepThink: Aligning Language Models with Domain-Specific User Intents. arXiv:2502.05497.”
Ablation adaptability points to a strategy-distribution figure

“In addition, we evaluate the adaptability of different ablation variants in Fig. 4 (b).”
“Subfigure (b) presents the distribution over strategy categories (e.g., content restructuring, elaboration, redundancy reduction), capturing the model's typical operational behavior under intent-driven guidance.”
Role distribution is assigned to the wrong figure

“After incorporating the 4W multi-role deep reflection mechanism, the method achieves further improvements on Subjective Impression metrics, while exhibiting a certain degree of degradation on Objective Impression.”

About these checks
Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.
Claims read by deepseek-v4.1-flash under definition version 3 (extract-v3) on 2026-10-29.
Classified by jev-1.13-20260917 (gold-guideline-v0.2) on 2026-10-29.
Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.
Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
