Virtue ethics as a resource in business

Open access
Audi, Robert·2012·Business Ethics Quarterly

Abstract

This article provides an account of virtues as praiseworthy traits of character with a far-reaching capacity to influence conduct. Virtues supply their possessors both with good reasons that indicate, for diverse contexts, what sort of thing should be done and with motivation to do them. This motivational power of virtue is crucial for the question of what kind of person, or businessperson, one wants to be. The article shows how the contrast between virtue ethics and rule ethics is often drawn too sharply and indicates how virtue theories can incorporate both theoretical and practical uses of rules. More generally, it shows how a virtue orientation affects attitudes in management practices and how an understanding of certain virtues can help in making better decisions, both ethically and in relation to success in business.

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Virtue ethics is an appropriate theoretical foundation for developing a responsible AI initiative framework in health care.

“Thus, virtue ethics is an appropriate theoretical foundation for developing a responsible AI initiative framework in health care because prior research suggests that the presence of virtuous character traits (e.g., fairness and honesty) in an agent (person or organization) can positively impact the actions of that agent (Audi, 2012;Chun, 2005).”
  • Virtue ethics theory has been used to examine what constitutes a moral action in the context of business management by focusing on the ethical aspects of everyday business operations.

“As noted above, virtue ethics theory has been used to examine what constitutes a moral action in the context of business management by focusing on the ethical aspects of everyday business operations.(Audi, 2012).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
