The drastic loss of jejunum and ileum interferes with normal absorption of various substances, leading to metabolic derangement, vitamin deficiencies, and even nutritional cirrhosis of the liver (1). We have recently seen a patient with hypothyroidism and obesity who developed severe malabsorption of thyroid hormones after a bypass operation.A 38-year-old white woman was referred for evaluation of hypothyroidism in March 1977. She had been grossly obese ( >160 kg) for most of her adult life and had undergone a small intestinal bypass in August 1974....References1. This paper’s full text isn’t openly available, so its claims and self-check weren’t run. The registry and citation checks still apply.

Claims other papers make about this one

Each is checked against this paper’s own text: does it say what the citing paper says it does?

  • Although case reports suggest increased LT4 requirements after intestinal bypass surgery, direct study showed LT4 absorption appeared preserved after Roux-en-Y surgery and in 32 patients undergoing other gastric bypass procedures.

“Although there are case reports of increased LT4 requirements after intestinal bypass surgery (164-166), when studied directly LT4 absorption appeared to be preserved after Roux-en-Y surgery (167) and in 32 patients undergoing various other gastric bypass procedures (168).”

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
