Abstract

Abstract The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered as one of the major roadblocks for many renewable electrochemical energy technologies, such as water splitting, rechargeable metal‐air batteries. Thus the development of efficient and low‐cost OER electrocatalysts has achieved a lot of research and development attention. Aerogels, as featured by large surface area, high porosity, and self‐supportability, provide an excellent platform for the design of efficient electrocatalysts. This review summarizes the recent progress of the aerogel‐based design of catalysts in tackling the challenges in the field of OER electrocatalysis. The correlation between catalyst design strategy and catalytic performances is evaluated to provide a roadmap for the development of aerogel‐based OER electrocatalysts. Thereafter, the current state of our understanding of the application of the aerogel concept in OER electrocatalysis is provided, which could serve as a guide to the development of future aerogel electrocatalysts.

  • A catalyst with favorable H* adsorption and desorption simultaneously would preferably have a ΔGH* near zero, resulting in optimal kinetics and activation for HER.

“A catalyst that exhibits favorable H* adsorption and desorption at the same time would preferably have a ΔGH* near to zero, which could result in optimal kinetics and activation for the hydrogen evolution reaction [56].”

From Silica Aerogels as a Promising Vehicle for Effective Water Splitting for Hydrogen Production (2025) · cites this paper as [56]

The Introduction identifies HER as the cathodic half-reaction of water splitting, but does not discuss H* adsorption or its free energy. Section 3.2 discusses adsorption–desorption balance for OER intermediates, not hydrogen; searches for ΔGH*, hydrogen binding energy, and HER adsorption kinetics found no passage supporting the claimed near-zero criterion. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
