Abstract

Product-service systems (PSSs) are gaining traction as a means of achieving sustainability. Predicting potential barriers of PSSs at the design phase is crucial for enhancing their social acceptability. To realise such predictions, designers should understand the relationship between potential barriers and features of designing PSSs in advance. Although existing studies have investigated several barriers in the design, implementation, and operation of PSSs, the relationship between the barriers and the PSS features is not sufficiently clear. Thus, predicting potential barriers during the design process remains challenging. The aim of this study was to propose a method to predict potential barriers based on the features of a PSS designed to enable appropriate preventive actions towards a sustainable PSS. To this end, this study investigated potential barriers and developed the categories that organise barriers in each life cycle phase (design, implementation, operation, etc.) of PSSs based on a literature review. Then, tendencies of the relationship between barriers and the features of PSSs were extracted by applying the developed categories to several PSS case studies. This result is effective for designers’ appropriate preventive actions for PSS configuration in the design phase by predicting potential barriers from the features of PSS being designed.

“There are a few examples of viable PSS business models for furniture, including services such as refurbishing, relocating and recycling (Copani and Behnam, 2020), maintenance and repair (Inagaki et al., 2022), and remanufacturing (Krystofik et al., 2018).”

Section 4 identifies an office-furniture leasing PSS, and Section 5.1 says it required maintenance. The paper does not describe repair as a service or establish that this furniture business model was viable; instead, Section 5.1 reports barriers to maintaining and managing it. The other services in the citing sentence have separate citations and are not assessed here. Page numbers were unavailable in our copy. (LLM, conf=0.85)

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
