The Role of Adsorbed CN and Cl on an Au Electrode for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Abstract

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction is one of the promising ways to convert CO 2 to value-added products such as CO. Many studies have dealt with suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and increasing the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) through modification of the metal surface with additives such as anchoring agent, anion, etc. However, there are only a few studies about modifying the Au surface with additives. We present here a theoretical prediction that the addition of the CN and Cl species on an Au electrode would enhance the electrochemical CO 2 RR due to van der Waals interactions with these large anionic species. On the basis of this suggestion, we then prepared functionalized Au electrodes by electroplating in an aqueous solution containing CN – or Cl – and experimentally verified that the CO 2 RR of functionalized Au indeed shows exceptional CO 2 RR activity in comparison to pristine Au.

About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
