Characterizing self-injurious cognitions: Development and validation of the Suicide Attempt Beliefs Scale (SABS) and the Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Beliefs Scale (NSIBS).

Abstract

= .5. Both instruments demonstrated small to moderate-sized correlations with a range of clinical variables, measures of well-being, and purportedly similar, existing SIB constructs. Various analyses indicate that SA and NSSI SICs are similar but distinct phenomena, supporting the use of separate terminology and definitions of SA and NSSI, and pointing to the importance of separating SA and NSSI in research and clinical practice. We hope that the development of the SABS and NSIBS may unify the field somewhat in its understanding and measurement of the basic constituent elements of SICs. • There were some strong changes in participants' thoughts in relation to self-harm by the end of the group, as documented by the Cognitions of Self-injurious Behaviour Scale.

“There were some strong changes in participants' thoughts in relation to self-harm by the end of the group, as documented by the Cognitions of Self-injurious Behaviour Scale (Siddaway et al., 2019).”

The Development of the Final Scales results describe measures of cognitions about suicide attempts and nonsuicidal self-injury, supporting the use of a scale to assess thoughts about self-harm. But the paper identifies two scales—the SABS and NSIBS—not a single “Cognitions of Self-injurious Behaviour Scale.” It does not report changes by the end of a group; that appears to be the citing authors’ own finding. About these checks

Registry, retraction, Cites and statistics results are computed, not judged, with one exception: a printed reference that no index lists is read once by a model before it counts as a citation error. Claims are extracted by a model and kept only when their quote appears verbatim in the text; each cited source is then checked, with a model’s help, for whether it says what the claim relies on. Those verdicts can be wrong — read the claim’s quote and the cited source before relying on one.

Statistics and arithmetic are recomputed, not judged.

Confidence bands are shown only for fields calibrated on our annotated test set. None is calibrated yet, so no band is shown.
